Cinematography, Editing and Mise-en-scene

Cinematography:

We will use alot of camera movements in the video, We will use panning and tracking to make the band the main focus. We will also use low angle and high angle shots to get different views of the band which keeps the viewer intrested even though it is still about the same band. We will also use hand held camera to give the video more of a atmosphere and it will involve the viewers more.

Editing:
We will use continuety editing for the storyline part of our video. So this will keep the audience watching too see what will happen to the artist. We will make the editing smooth and the editing will have quicker cuts when the beat of the music gets faster (goodwin's theory - Music and Visuals). We will use transistion when it changes from the band to the storyline. We will also edit the effects of the video. When the band it playing we will have it brighter to create a better atmosphere but when it is on the storyline we might have it in black and white which makes it more dark and dull which representes the story line.
We have taken ideas from other music videos such as 'Ed Sheeran - A Team' for the story line we will try and play on ideas from that and create the same dull dark effect.

Examples of Previous Student Videos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovtvmf9G5lU&list=UUzwOi-DLGOtzMBThPjKY9kQ&index=88&feature=plpp_video

this music video was made from previous students. it includes some editing techniques we will include in ours such as editing to the beat and lip-syncing. although our video wont include any green screen editing it does show other effects that can be done from editing such as split-screen.  This video also
shows that repetition can get boring and that we should try and keep the viewer as interested as possible.

this music video was also made from previous, it is a good example how bad lip-syncing can make the entire video look unprofessional. it also demenstrates thats a music video can become boring if the location doesnt change. however the clothes worn do match the music genre which we will apply to our video because it is what the viewer would expect

Target audience and their expectations

The type of audience for the indie rock genre would be aimed mostly for teenage boys. The videos which are centered around the artists have nothing more to attract audience. This means that they will be attracting audience for the music and the band rather then objectifing women in the video.

We will also do this to attract the audience to our video. We are going to have a band in a set location. We will use camera angles and movements to focus on the artists. Using mise-en-scene we will use costume to bring out the genre of the video. This will appeal to the audience because it is what they're expecting. For our video we are going to try and use lighting and effects to create the gloomy atmopshere.

Genre Conventions and Planning to use them

Our Music video will be in the Indie Rock genre

Conventions of this genre would be:

- Bands
- Instruments
- Dark colouring
- Dark atmosphere is created
- Locations don't change
- Random aspects thrown in to the videos
- No storylines, concentrates on the band

In our video we plan to use some genre conventions such as a band and instruments. We plan to have a locations similar to the genre conventions like a garage or empty place. We Will focus the music video around the band. In the video we will try to create and dark and gloomy atmosphere with the editing and lighting.

Research Indie Rock Music Videos

Kasabian - Days are Forgotten

In this music video it follow the genre conventions of:
- Centers around the Artist
- The Atmosphere of the video is that it's gloomy and dull which matches the Indie Rock Genre
        - The Video is in black and white which makes this effect the audience more
- The location of the video is in a empty space - could be a warehouse

This video also follow some of Goodwin's Theory:
- It follow the genre characteristics
- Visuals and Music match: the beat of the music is seen visually by sound waves in the video. This makes this video more interesting for the audience to watch.
- This video also Sells the Artist to the target audience because it follows the genre conventions which the target audience will be looking for. It portrays the artist in a good way especially with the way the camera moves around them using low angle shots.

Arctic Monkeys

This music video is similar to the Kasabian video because they are both in Black and white, The locations are both similar and in both videos they only really stay in one location. In this video they are in a car and it centre around the 2 artists.

In both of the video it focuses on the bands and they're instruments. In this video one of the artists uses the steering wheel as a drum.

In this video it has quite random aspects. There are 2 girls who are dressed as cowgirls which has nothing to do with the song. so this goes against Goodwin's Theory and does not match Visuals and lyrics.

Summary of Ideas

song choice: one night only - stay at home
our idea is a music video centered around the artists but with a side story. we will ask our friends to perform in the video as the artists. our music video will follow the conventions of a indie rock video. The side story will potentially be the main artist trying to find his girlfriend to get her home, this relates to the lyrics of the song. it will include location changes from where they are performing to the artist searching the streets. during the chorus we will return to the same location but wont use the same clip each time. we will use guitars and microphones as props during the performance part of the video as well as clothes that match the genre. during the clips in the streets we wont need to supply any props but again wear clothes that match the genre (but not the same clothes). we will use a variety of clips and panning during the performance parts such as extreme close ups and low angle shots. whereas in the story parts it will consist of tracking shots and a variety of angles.

Auteur Theory

The Auteur Theory is when a director shows similarities through their own music videos through themes, editing styles and story-lines of the music video (if any). We looked at a music video director Hype Williams who has directed videos for artists such as 2pac, Jay-Z, Kayne West, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. We watched 2pac 'California Love', Notorious B.I.G ' Warning' and Jay-Z "Big Pimpin'".   We found that there are similarities between all 3 of them within the camera work.

Grant's photoshop work.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6qjgslXXO0

This link takes you to the tutorial i followed to create a piece in photoshop. This was very helpful, because it gave me a lot of knowledge and new skills to help with my music video.

Text effect.
These 3 pieces are some off the things i did in my spare time at home. This image could be used in the digipack  to help illustrate the band name and give it a bigger impact for the viewer.
Modified iris.

Energy ball.

This image is of an iris that has been modified in a way that it stands out more. Also I have added the ripple effect and the reflections to help give a more natural effect. This helped because it gave me some new skills to use in photoshop.

This image is off an energy ball i created using photoshop. it could come in very handy as it gave me a lot of knowledge and understanding of most of the tools in photoshop.

Photoshop Task

For our photoshop task we watched a tutorial on youtube which instructed us on how to make this. From doing this practice task we learnt new techniques on photoshop. We learnt how to use a variety of different filters and layers, and how to use different contrasts and colours to make the picture more effective. From doing this tutorial we feel more confident in using photoshop.

Star Persona Mood Board

Richard Dyer's Theory is that someone is considered once interest in there personal life outweighs interest in their profession. A Star image is constructed out of a range of materials for example Magazine articles or posters. Stars represent shared cultural values for example being thin and fashion trends.

Grant's Goodwin's analysis.

This is my Goodwin's analysis of the two artists Kanye west, and Jay Z.  I applied his theory to the two videos and made a powerpoint about the results.

Goodwin's Theory Powerpoint

This powerpoint is us applying Goodwin's theory to two music videos in the pop genre. We used two artist from the same era with a similar fan base. We applied all of Goodwin's six points to each music video.
