The overall feedback for our video was that it had a variety of camera angles, transitions and shot types. the main criticism was that we didn't include enough cuts which brought the pace of the video down, which then didn't fit the tempo of the song at certain points. however we where credited on our use of mise-en-scene such as costumes, props and location.

Evaluation Final Cut
For the 3 separate parts of our music video we had different opinions of them
- The Band performing
- The girl in black and white
- The main singer alone
For the Band performing we think that most of these scene turned out really well, we like the effect that we have used on them. The colour correction has made the video look brighter and more professional. It makes the mise-en-scene stand out more and look more effective with in the video. We had a few issues with framing after we had filmed but we decided to draw more attention to something else in the shot so it's not as noticeable. We think that by using the band and instruments it was well fitting to the genre conventions.

Final cut filter analysis
In our music video we chose to have the girl in black and white because we think it will create more of an effect on the audience and portray her emotions clearer. We used a desaturate filter effect to do this.
To use the desaturate effect, we went to Effects, video filters, Image control, desaturate.
For the performance scenes we have used a colour correct filter to make the colours in the scene look more bold it also makes the character stand out more.
to use the colour correct filter we went to effects, video filters, colour correction and then colour correct.
When we were filming the scenes at night when we added then onto final cut we saw that they were to dark and you couldn't really see what was happening in the clip so we put up the brightness.
To put up the brightness we went onto Effect, Video filters, Image control and then brightness and then we put the brightness higher.

Feedback from The technician (Aaron)
Aaron said that overall he was pleased with our music video. He said we had a good variety of of shots and camera angles. Our editing was good and we was editing on the beat, which was a major convention of a music video.
The one thing that Aaron said to do was that we could maybe use the colour correction on the clips where it was just the band playing to help bring out the colours and make them pop. We did this and as well as make the colours brighter and bring them out, it also made it look like it was filmed at sundown, so it was a nice effect that it gave us.
This is what the colour correction has done to the clip. It has brought out the red/ pink hoody, while also making the trees behind stand out more. Also it gives the sunset effect as if we was filming at this time.

Digipack Analysis
We are going to take a idea from this digipack by having the front and back cover with the same sort of picture that blend with each other, We are going to what they have done with clouds but with a brick wall, we will have them both the same effect but on the front cover it will have the name of the band and maybe the digipack name.
They keep the same theme through out the digipack which we will also do with our theme 'typical london'
On the back cover of our digipack we will have the information like, the songs on the CD, special features and maybe bonus tracks or bonus footage.
Although the layout of our digipack will be different to this one by The Verve, we can still use it as inspiration for our digipack, by concentrating on the pictures and text used.
the cover and back of this digipack is a scenic view of clouds, there is also pictures of these clouds inside but mainly the pictures inside are of the band performing at various venues. some pictures of the band have a caption describing the picture or a quote from a band member, said about the picture. this gives an insight in to a more personal side of the band members and can be used to build their star persona, this is an idea we might use in our digipack.

previous student magazine adverts
As a group we looked at magazine adverts done by previous students so we could se what works and what is possible when it comes to making our own magazine advert. we analysed the two adverts below and agreed that the plain picture of someone holding a guitar is more effective and fits the genre, however the text was too boring and there wasn't enough. whereas the other advert had a bad picture that didn't fit any specific genre or sold the artist but has much better formatted and detailed text on top.
We are planning to use a simple yet effective picture of the artist and include detailed text that in a format that fits the genre.
extra night filming
On tuesday the 6th of november, we filmed some extra footage to fill in the blanks left in our video. We all met at kiefer's house and started filming the footage we needed. we started off filming the footage we needed inside the house first and then went outside to get some footage of the street. however once we started filming outside it was pitch black, we expected it to be dark but not as dark as it was, even though we did have torches, we had to rely mainly on the lights of streetlamps. this severely limited were we could film because once we were outside the reach of the streetlamps it was too dark for the cameras to see anything. Unfortunately our friends were not able to join us on this extra night filming so we were not able to film any performance pieces. however we had planed incase this happened and were still able to film decent footage that will fit in the music video.

Magazine Advert - Research
Both of these magazine adverts have images of the artist.
This advert of Rihanna has a images of her as the background and the main attraction to the picture. IIt has information of the name of the album, the artist, her record label and the date of release.
This advert of Lady Gaga has 4 images of the artist, the name of the artist, the name of the album, a quote about her 'The defining pop star of 2009', information about the songs on the album and who it features. It also has the information at where it is available.
For our magazine advert we want to create the same effect as these to, we want to include the same information. We are planning to have our magazine advert with a image of the band as the background and then with text over the top. We also want to include a image of either a guitar or a microphone so it shows viewers the type of band they are.
We will include the right information over the top of the image including.
- The name of the band
- The album name
- Someone who features in the album
- Where it is available

Extra filming Sessions
We are going to take the camera again on (tuesday 6th november) to film more for our music video. We are going to choose a different location and wear different costumes. We have chosen to do it in a different location because then it will not create an issue with continuity.
For this part what we are filming we are going to do the band preforming still.
The reason we are going to filming again is because we don't have enough footage to complete to 3 minutes of the song. We also need to add in more camera angles and movements in the video. We need more footage because we need to add more cuts in the video and we can't use the same clips otherwise it will get repetitive and look un-professional. For the footage we already have we to change some because of the framing some of the clip have cut part of the main singers head off which we will need to re-film.
Both of these clips have issues with framing with we will have to change when we go out again.

Rough Cut Feedback - Holly
- You need to re-frame some of your shots, look carefully at what you can/want to see and alter this in final cut.
-You need more cutaways, angles and also the camera need to more.
- Is there a link between the band and the storyline? - make it more clear.

half term homework - task five
The five videos I watched by OKgo where:
I would describe their star persona as being a band that dont take themselves too seriously and enjoy having a laugh and a good time. The video's portray them to be unique and unlike a stereotypical band and makes a statement that they are not trying to be like anyone else.
what use of Goodwins theory is used in their videos
in the majority of their videos there was no use of editing on the beat but there would still be a relationship between the visuals and the music through what was physically happening, for example in "needing/getting" it shows things being hit at the same time as the beat. There are no examples of a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics in the video except for in "get over it" where there is several examples of this, such as when the lyrics says "hey" the camera shows a pile of hay.
there are no examples of voyuerism throughout any of the videos. Every single video revolves around the artists which provides the need to sell the artist. there are no examples of intertextuality. The video for "get over it" is the only one that includes any examples of genre characteristics, with a performance and instruments included in the video.
how would you describe their target audience
I would say they dont have a specific target audience but are making music for anyone who likes it to buy, it would consist more of a young indie crowd but would spread out across many types of audiences.
how are they attempting to appeal to an alternative audience
they are attempting to appeal to an alternative audince by having unique and entertaining music videos, these videos attract viewers who have never heard of the song or band because they are amusing and fun to watch. this attracts an audience who may not be usually intrested in the genre or style of music.

how would you describe the target audience for your music video
the target audience for our music video would be a stereotypical indie crowd consisting mainly of young people.
how are you attempting to target that audience
we are attempting to target that audience by using a stereotypical indie rock looking band and including many characeristics and conventions of a stereotypical indie rock music video.
- get over it
- here it goes again
- this too shall pass
- white knuckles
- needing/getting

half term homework - task four
TV channels such as Channel AKA will not play our music video because it doesnt fit in with the genre they play on their channel, however channels such as Kerrang and Mtv Rocks would play our music video because it fits their genre, and then channels such as starz will also play our muic video because they play every genre. a few online chnnels may play our music video such as bandarockchannel on youtube would post our music video on their online blog whereas SBtv, another music channel on youtube, would definately not play our music video because it doesnt fit into their genre or style of music.
Task four.
MTV.
This music channel would show our music because they show all genres of music out.
Viva
This channel would show our video because they have a wide variety of shows with different types of music on each one.
AKA
This channel would not show our video because they focus mainly around the genre rock.
SCUZZ.

GRIME

Task three.
Artists use social media to increase the consumption of their music by tweeting it, or making a status. For example if a band like the 'kook's' tweet people about their new album, as they have about 20 million followers, they will all be able to see that tweet and it would increase their publicity, which in turn increases consumption. They may also use social networking sites to give them self a better star persona. They could do this by tweeting about relevant events in the world that could make their fans feel empathetic for them. An example of this is when Cherol Cole tweeted about her recent break up with her husband.
We could use social media sites to increase consumption of our music by tweeting about album release dates, if we were going to be on a radio show or if we were going to be on television. This would increase awareness, that will hopefully increase consumption.
Task Two.
Our original idea for our ancillary products was based around it being 'British' We wanted it to be stereotypical almost with British objects and things on the front cover of our digipak. I did some practise on Photoshop where i got a stereotypical London scene. Desaturated the whole image and then used the 'History Brush' to bring out the reds on things like Underground signs, London buses and taxis.
On our digipak we will probably have something like this but with a picture of the band on the next page or on the back cover. .
The ancillary products will have mise-en-scene that match genre characteristics such as location and costume which will match the indie rock genre.
The magazine advert will consist of a picture of the band to try and get more publicity and spread the word of the band and the song.

half term homework - task three
Artists use social media, such as twitter, to inform their fans directly about any projects they are working on or albums that may be released soon. for example if Lady Gaga made a tweet about her new album it could be seen by nearly 31 million people who follow her, and since they follow her it means they are her fans and are interested, but it would also be visible to other people on twitter as well. they may also use social media to improve their star persona, by tweeting about world events they can show people that they are "caring" and "nice" people, which means people will like them more.
we could use social media to increase the consumption of our music video by posting it online and creating some kind of competition that would require them to watch the video to win.
we could use social media to increase the consumption of our music video by posting it online and creating some kind of competition that would require them to watch the video to win.
Task one.
Analysing our rough cut music video using Goodwins framework. Goodwins six points are :
- genre characteristics
- relationship between visuals and lyrics
- relationship between visuals and music
- need to sell artist
- intertextuality
- voyeurism
Genre Characteristics.
In our music video we tried to follow as much characteristics of an Indie Rock Genre as we could. Our video focused on the band performing as a unit, which is a typical convention of an indie video and also gives the effect of a more old fashioned video. Also we focus mainly on a sad narrative which is another big characteristic of an indie video. Another characteristic that we did was the heavy
focus on the instruments being played.
Relationships between video and lyrics.
I feel that there is a deffinate link between the lyrics and the video, because the lyrics talk about giving him a second chance and that he wants forgiveness for something he has done. Our video shows that a girl has been left waiting hours for a boy and the boy never turns up. These two relate because they both show and tell the same story.
Relationship between video and music.
Our video has a few examples of editing on the beat. For example, the intro is the girl with a desaturation filter, but as soon as the chorus starts we cut to the band jumping on the beats of the song. Also we have variations of cut speeds. For example when the girl is using her phone, the tempo of the cuts speed up.
Need to sell to artist.
Our video focuses mainly on the band, specifically the lead singer. This means that all of the audiences attention is focused on the lead singer.
Intertextuality.
We include one example of intertexuality, one of the guitarist in the band is wearing a hat with "your demise" written across the front, which is a band from a similar genre. We include a close up of this but it can also be seen in other shots however only people with knowledge of the genre would notice it.
Voyeurism.
Our video has a strong theme of voyeurism The biggest shot is where were filming from a balcony and the band are looking forward as if they have no idea they are being filmed.
half term homework - task two
as a group, our original idea for the ancillary products was to have a "British" theme as the band is british. we were going to include a stereotypical London scene with red buses, London taxis, red telephone box and an underground sign.
we examples of this and practised using photoshop techniques on them such as making the picture black and white except for everything red, which emphasises the buses and telephone boxes.
our digi pack will have a "British" themed cover and back with pictures of the band and band members on the inside. these pictures will show the band in stereotypical indie clothes but not the same as in the music video. the location will also be different to the one used in the video.
our magazine advert will be linked by also using the "British" theme with text about the album and a rating.

analysing our roughcut music video using Goodwins framework. goodwins six points are :
- genre characteristics
- relationship between visuals and lyrics
- relationship between visuals and music
- need to sell artist
- intertextuality
- voyeurism
genre characteristics
throughout our music video we demonstrate different examples of characteristics that are conventional of the indie rock genre. Our video mainly concentrates on the band performing and resolves around the lead singer of the band which are characteristic's of an indie rock music video. Instruments are also often used in indie rock video's and close ups of instruments such as guitars are characteristics which are included in our roughcut music video.
relationship between the visuals and the lyrics
There is no direct link between the visuals in our video and the lyrics of the song, mainly because our music video revolves around the performance rather than a story line.
relationship between the visuals and the music
our roughcut music video includes several examples of editing on the beat such as cutting to a different scene when the chorus starts. also we show examples of changing the tempo of the editing to match the tempo of the song, so when the tempo speeds up we have faster cuts and editing.
need to sell artist
Our roughcut music video resolve around the band and in particular the lead singer. this means the audience's attention is centred on the artist and provides the need to sell the artist.
intertextuality
we include one example of intertexuality, one of the guitarist in the band is wearing a hat with "your demise" written across the front, which is a band from a similar genre. we include a close up of this but it can also be seen in other shots however only people with knowledge of the genre would notice it.
voyeurism
Our roughcut music video has a strong theme of voyeurism with the side story consisting of the girl sitting on the bench waiting for someone, all the shots are taken without her knowledge of being watched. we also include one example of voyeurism towards the band while they are performing.
the five things we would do to improve are:
- including an example of a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics
- including more variety of cinematography
- include more costume changes
- include more location changes
- include more editing on the beat
with an extra night filming we would, fill in the blanks in our roughcut by filming more footage. the footage would include a costume change and a location change.
Task Five - OKGo videos.
I watched 5 of OKGo's music videos:
-Skyscraper
-End Love
-This too shall pass
-White Knuckles
-Last Leaf
1. OKGo's star persona has been portrayed through each of these music videos. they each show that OKGo are very different to the stereotypical boyband. They have made each video unique and fitting to them rather than how they think the audience might want it to be. Each video is very random. They use colours as a big part of each video. This is a bold statement to the audience.
2. The use of Goodwin's theory in OKGo's videos is only through Visuals and Music. Editing on the beat it essential in their videos because they do alot of moving in them such as dancing or the use of stop motion animation. In the video 'Last leaf' it uses stop motion animation with slices of bread and the editing in the video matches the beat of the music. Also in the video 'Skyscraper' there are to people dancing to the beat of the music.
3. I would say that OKGo doesn't create there music for a specific target audience, I think that they create there videos for everyone. It is not aimed specifically for girls or boys of any age. They create there videos for general people rather than just some. I think that they make the videos for visual effect rather then connecting with fans or the audience.
4. They appeal to a alternative audience again through creating very visual videos, with the bright colours and the random aspects of the video. There videos are very different to 'normal, standard music videos' like in 'This too shall pass' They have a whole marching band walking through a field.
5&6. The target audience for our music video is very specific they have to enjoy the type of music that the song is. Also it is aimed for both genders. we have put different aspects in the video that will appeal to both like the band performing is more for the male gender and the storyline with the girl is for females because they could emotionally feel what this girl is feeling. The age is generally for about 14-15+ because we think that people under this age might get bored with just the band playing and they will want more going on in the video and also because they haven't been through experiences like the girl so wont understand why it's in the video.

Task Four - Exhibition
Posting videos on YouTube is good for the fans to consume the product, it is a well known site that is easily accessible to everyone on the internet. It can be published through social networking sites, which gets it watched by a wider audience.
TV music channels will also show our video. Channels such as MTV rocks and 'Scuzz' will show our video because they show the 'indie rock' genre. It matches with the other videos played on these channels and also gets the video shown to the right type of audience. Channels such as 'MTV dance' will not want to show our video because they show electronic type music, if they were to play our video then the people who watch that channel will be unsatisfied with that because they have chosen that music channel to watch for a specific reason and if they were to play 'stay at home' then it could make viewers turn off.

Task Three - Social Media
Bands use social media to connect with their fans, it gives fans
information on the band and the events they're doing. It also include
images of gigs they have previously done and it is a way for the fans to
interact with the band from home.
The band One night only have a Facebook and Twitter page which they post pictures and also their new music for the fans to see and listen to.
Using social media also creates a star persona for the band. It gives the fans a chance to see the real people rather than just them in the band. They post pictures of them working on the tracks they will produce and also pictures that show their personality rather than just to do with working. This gives fans a chance to connect with the band.
- posting personal pictures of the band creates a star persona so this could make the band more likeable as individuals and also makes the fans feel more drawn to them.
- It also helps with types of soical media like twitter when the band can reply to questions asked by the fans.
For our band they would use soical media such as facebook, twitter and also a personal band website to increase the consumption of the song and video, It will be easier to publish the song to a wider variety of audiences and will increase the number of people who buy it. Soical media is a way of free advertisement and a wide range of people use them so it is easy for them to get hold of the information that could be posted by our band.

Task Two - ancillary products
Our original idea for our ancillary products was based around it being 'British' we wanted stereotypically british things on the front cover of our digipack, We have done practice ones on Photoshop which include Red London buses, taxi's etc..
With our digipack we will have one of these types of pictures on the front (British) and then we will link it in with our main product by having a picture of the band on the inside or back cover of the pack.
The ancillary products will have mise-en-scene that match genre characteristics such as location and costume which will match the indie rock genre.
For the magazine advert we will have a picture of the band because then it explain the band more and will make it clear that it is advertising the band and the song. We want a sort of picture like professional bands such as this:

Task One - evaluating and improving
In our Music video we have used micro elements to show the genre characteristics through the video and also the storyline of the video.
We have used Mise-en-scene in our video to show the emotions of the character in the video. We have also used it to include intertextuality with the hat of the base player. we have also used the location of the storyline in a dark gloomy place where it's quite and she is alone which portrays her emotions more to the audience.
We have used editing to create quick cuts in the video so the viewers wont get bored. we have used parallel editing as there are to things happening in the video, the storyline of the girl and then the band preforming. They link together through the lyrics.
We have used camera shots and angles to create interest for the viewer. We used movement in one of our shots when it creates the effect that the lead singer has hit the camera. We found this idea from watching professional videos.
5 things to improve our video:
1- include more shot types of the band preforming.
2- use more editing on the beat.
3- Include the need to sell the artist - include more costume changes.
4- use different types of filters
5- Include more clips so cuts can be quicker and more often.

Rough Cut Feedback
In the half term i asked 10 different people to watch our rough cut video and give feedback on what we can improving through editing, mise-en-scene and for the next time we go out filming.
1: Include more costume changes because it is all very similar.
2: Include more camera angles and shots of the band preforming because at the moment it is very similar and is mostly a mid shot of the band.
3: Portray the storyline more, maybe include the boy in the video because then it will explain the story more.
4: Sometimes you can't tell what the main singer is saying so it makes it look like it's not lip synced, do more shots where it's more clear what he's saying.
5: Add more effects and filters to match the genre - like the girl is in black and white, add a filter for when the band is playing.
6: Have more editing on the beat, when the girl is walking to the door then have it to match the beat of the music.
7: film more clips of the band playing because you need more cuts
8: Have more movement in your video, use tracking and pan shots more or more handheld shots.
9: include more costume changes because it doesn't really match the genre.
10: Make the scenes with the girl more clear for the storyline.

Half Term Homework- Feedback.
For our homework we had to find 10 different people to give us feedback on our rough cut music video.
Person 1: I feel that you need more camera angles in your video because it would make it a more interesting watch for the viewer.
Person 2: I think that you need a bigger variety of locations when your band is playing because it gives the video more depth and realism.
Person 3: You need more footage of the girl being stood up because it helps to make the audience feel sorry for her, and convey the narrative.
Person 4: Get more footage for your final video as their were gaps in the video.
Person 5: Try to match their outfits with the type of music their singing, because it helps to give the video a more realistic effect.
Person 6: The main singer in the group is sometimes hard to see what he is saying. If you change this im sure it will give a much better effect.
Person 7: When the girl is sat on the bench she seems to be sat on some sort of carrier bag. It doesn't look right and i don't think you would see it in a music video on TV.
Person 8: I also think you need more angles from the camera and the musician.
Person 9: I feel that you need more people appearing in the video. The videos we see on television at the moment there are a lot more than four people in on video.
Person 10: When you are filming, try to keep all the band members in shot, or have one at a time maybe? but when a band member goes out of shot, then enters again randomly it gives the video an ammeter effect.
All this feedback has been really helpful for me to try and make a professional music video. I have learnt that we need to take more footage to give a more professional feel, we need to a new location to film in to try and give the video more depth. Bit on the whole i will be trying to amend all the feedback from my friends and family to try and create a more professional music video.
