3.teenagers
4.middle aged people
5.indie rock

313-30
4.18-25
5.16-35
How would you picture the band/ lead?
1. Wearing indie clothes.
2. kind of punky.

3.a sad video where a girl is left heart broken.
4. A couple are arguing but make up in the end.
5. a couple break and and the artist is trying to get her back.

From this research we have learned that our video goes with what people expect it to look like from the lyrics of the song. we have also learned that we are targeting the right age range for our our target audience.  We are not quite getting the right costumes and outfits that the research gave us, so when we get some more footage we could try and get a more expected look so the audience are not disappointed.
The viewer expects a narrative where there is a problem with a girl and a boy. Our video is about where a girl has been 'stood up' and left waiting for hours, but the boy never shows until she is home and angry. I feel that this is what the audience expect to happen when they heard the song.
This has only really effected our creative process in on way and that is that we need to make a bigger effort with the costumes.

focused and ambient audiences

We have to think about David Buckingham's theory hat some audiences are not as deliberate or active in their consumption. In his theory there are two types of audience:
a focused audience: deliberately choosing a music video watch and carefully looking at the contents.
an ambient audience: that will have videos on in the background and will take in the content with glances.

we will be accommodating for the focused audiences by including a linear story line and story narrative however it will also accommodate to Ambient audiences because it is strongly focused on the performance and quick editing, as well as costume and location changes throughout.

ideal audience type

Our ideal audience would be indie teenagers, although indie rock is mostly aimed at boys are song will also attract girls because it can be considered a type of "love" song. it is often you get people aged older than 25 or younger than 13 listening to indie rock so this will be our expected audience. indie is a genre that is not only expressed through a style of music but also a style of clothing and their attitude towards the "mainstream" way of thinking. we would expect this type of audience because they will be of the same genre as the band and song.

Theoretical study into audience.

Blumler and Katz argued that audiences are ACTIVE and not PASSIVE and approached and use media products for the following reasons:
Diversion: A form of escaping from the pressure of everyday.
Personal relationships: where the viewer gains companionship, either with the television characters, or through conversations with others about television.
Personal identity: where the viewer is able to compare their life with the lives of characters and situations television, to explore, re-affirm or question their personality.
surveillance: where the media are looked upon for a supply of information about what is happening in the world.

I will now apply this theory to our work.

1. I think that the viewer will be entertained by our video because eit fills most of the criteria that makes a good video because we have fast cuts to keep them interested, we have a good narrative that is easy to follow and easy to relate to.

2. Are they entertained- I think the viewer will be entertained because of the personal relationships within the video. Because some of the the viewers will be able to relate to how the girl is feeling. she feels as if she has been played, and left on her own when she needed someone. Also the effect we used whenever you see the girl also helps the viewer to be more empathetic towards her.

3.I feel that younger girls would not like to be alice (the girl) in this vide because she is left heart broken and alone in the rain. On the other hand i think guys would aspire to be keifer (the lead singer) because he's in a band, he has confident and sings.

4. There is a lot of information available to the audience due to surveillance. we give them information such as what the band looks like what they are all about, so to speak. also we give them such information on who the girl is texting on her phone.

digital technologies

While making our music video we have had to use many different types of digital technologies. the first we had to use before anything was itunes as we had to download the song we were using, this was an advantage because it meant we could play the music while filming outside.
another thing that was useful was the video camera because it had spot focus which came in very handy when filming the close up on the phone when the girl texting. we are using final cut express to do our music video because it is the software we are most familiar with, however we are still not sure on how to use everything the software offers. Although we are still learning how to fully use the technologies, we have used them all before which means we are capable of using them to our advantage.

problems and success with editing

first day editing- we haven't had any problems so far apart from the fact that the first few lines of the song have been shot from the same angle, however we over come this problem by cutting to and from the performance shots and split them up so it changes angel and shots frequently. we have started editing by first putting the lip-syncing at the beginning of the video in line with the song and then edited and cut around that.

second day editing- we have realised that we haven't filmed enough footage for a certain section of the song, we debating cutting up over footage trying to create a montage to fill the space but we then decided to go out and film again on the 5th of november. although the group are certainly available we had to check that our friends are available as well and they are. we carried on editing the other parts of the video which went well.

third day editing-started to place clips for the last section of the song to establish exactly what points we need to film. Grant edited for 45 minute while Kiefer blogged and then they switched so they could both have some time editing, when they went to switch they discussed what they had done so the other knew what needed to be done and didn't waste time on something that the other had already completed. It became apparent which pars we would need to film.

editing in a professional video

we looked at two professional music video's and counted the number of cuts used in each to get a rough idea of how many should be used. in the video above (pixie lott-boys and girls) we counted 152 cuts and in the video below (one direction-live while we're young) we counted 154 cuts. this is a very high amount and tells us that we need to include as many cuts as we possibly can to give it a more professional feel. We were told that the average cuts for a student music video is around 30, this is no where near a professional standard and we will aim to include a lot more cuts than the student average, even if it isn't possible for us to include over 150 cuts we will use as many as we can.

filming

On sunday 14th of october we filmed the majority of our music video. We agreed to meet at Kiefer's house at 2 o'clock however everybody showed up early so we were set up and ready to film by 2 o'clock. Our friends showed up and supplied us with one guitar and a microphone as we asked them to. Kiefer supplied the other guitar but didn't have a guitar strap so our friends drove back to their house to get one for us. we had already brought the song on itunes so we set up a docking station up outside so we could hear the song properly while filming.

once everyone was there and all equipment and props were ready we sat down and discussed exactly what we were planning to do and referred to the shot list and story board so everybody knew exactly what needed to be done.

once filming we had very few problems other than heavy rain towards the end of our time spent filming, however we had already filmed all the performance parts of our video. Our friends left as we no longer needed their help and we waited for the rain to stop, once it did we carried on filming.

We tried to include some of Goodwins six points. We used intertextuality by having a guitarist wearing a hat with the name of a band from a genre.  We also used examples of voyeurism when filming the female in the video. The focus of the definatly the lead singer of the band, he is stood in front of everyone and centred. We also included genre characteristics of an indie video such as guitars and performance clips. Other points such as a relationship between the music and the video will be applied during the editing process.
above is a location picture of Kiefer's house, where we done the majority of the filming.

Lighting Research

The lighting techniques we want to use in our video will be:

Using a light behind the artist. We want to create the same effect as in Katy Perrys video 'Hot and Cold'

We will also use lighting to focus on the artists face, This will make them stand out more and make the audience focus on them rather then anything else happening in the back ground or on the other band member. We might use this whilst the artist is lip syncing.  They have used this type of lighting in the video 'In one ear - Cage the elephant'

Key lighting is important in music videos:

Alternative video.

This is an alternative video because it was created using I stop motion, or a similar program. This was alternative because it didn't involve any human actors or performers, it was totally animated and made from plaster sine. They have basically filmed there video like this because it is a very unique way to get noticed and appeal to a smaller niche audience. Also it will attract a lot of media interest such as magazines and articles. It also tries to connect it to the audience with emotions, such as comedy and empathy for the main character.

Intertextuality Music Video

This music video by Alien ant Farm is a reference to Michael Jackson. In the video there are many things that reference michael jackson. They use some of Michael Jackson signature dance moves.

Alien ant farm would use intertextuality in this music video because it relates to the song which is also a reference to michael Jackson's song 'Smooth Criminal'. They have tried to create comedy through the video by making fun of Michael Jackson. This is supposed to entertain the viewer.
In this video they also reference michael jackson through his pet monkey 'Bubbles'.

They also reference different Michael Jackson videos such as 'Billie Jean' they take aspects of the dancing and his costume. Michael Jackson is know for wearing short trousers and in this video the main artist pulls up the bottom of his trousers to reference this.

Alien Ant Farm have used intertextuality in their video to try and gain publicity. This creates free advertisement for the band because the press will have a lot to say about it. They will also create a talking point through social media. Posting this video online will make people talk about it and share it with friends. This is what they want to achieve.

Controversial Music Video.

This is a controversial music video because its widely different to the normal, and doesn't follow many genre characteristics of a music video. It includes unusual and weird scenes that you most likely would never see in a music video. They have done this because it would get them noticed an is a form of free advertising as people would tell their friends about how different it was.

The two images above are some examples of why this video was really controversial and unusual.

Digipak analysis.

This Digi-Pack is for Beyonce, We picked this digi pack to analyse because it represents the aritist which is what we want to achieve in ours. It has images of the artist which objectify her but this will appeal to the buyer. It has information on the album and the artist on the first panel, The next 2 are both CD holders. The CD's have different appearances the first is made to look like a vinyl record and the second is quite plain with writing on. Behind the CD's there are images of the artist.

This digipack focuses on the artist fully. It puts across the genre of the music and the type of artist she is. It keeps within her star persona. This is what we want to achieve in our digipack.

This is a michael jackson digi pack, This digi pack also represents the artist. It have very famous pictures of Michael Jackson. It shows his signature glove in the picture. There are 5 CD's in the pack which is a collection of his greatest hits. It has a black and white effect with gold text. Each CD had a silhouette of a famous Michael Jackson dance move. This digi pack also gives the impression of the artist and who he is.
We also want to achieve this with our digi pack representing the artist.

Genre Research

Indie Rock

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock, It first became well know in the UK and US in the 1980s. Most Indie rock songs and Videos are relatively low budget. In the early 1990s the main indie rock band was Nirvana. Most modern indie rock band now use Nirvana for inspiration for their music.

The Foo Fighters are another famous Indie Rock band.

Magazine Advert Analysis

Rihanna is the main object of this advert giving quite a deep, scary look and her pose in the image gives a mysterious and dominant look. Rihanna comes across as quite rocky and gothic in this magazine advert because of the dark colours used, and because of her make- up and style. Her make-up is heavy and dark making her look scary and the way she is looking directly into the camera with one of her hands covering half of her face makes her look suspicious and as if she’s hiding something. This image represents the style of songs on the album and gives the audience a good idea of what to expect from the album. The change in her style and image changes her star persona and portrays her to be challenging the   ideal.

From this Magazine advert we are going to take ideas from it for ours. We will like the filters used on this advert because of the effect created which is the same that we want to create. We also like the text used that says 'Rihanna' and 'The new album' We think that it will work for ours as well because it will give it a more professional feel.

Target Audience Analysis

Our music video is going to be in the genre 'Indie Rock'.

The point of having a target audience is so we can make are video to fit their wants and expectations. We want to satisfy the audience with the video we will create.
Our target audience will be people who listen to this genre. The video will be aimed for teenage boys and young adults. The age range will be from about 14-25. We are not going to do any younger than this because our music video will be mostly the band performing so a younger age might get bored if there is not enough going on in the video for them to watch. The older end of our age range will appreciate the use of instruments and the musical aspect of the video. In our video there will aspects for females. The story line along side the performance will be there for female to relate emotionally to the character in the video.

Contacting Original Artist

We tried contacting the original artist to ask permission to use their song, but there was no reply.

More digipack ideas.

We could use this eon ribbon effect in our digipack.

Our original looked like this.

Test Footage

this is our test footage. we practiced using new equipment like the dolly, as well as making sure whats shot will and wont work in our final music video.

Shot List

This shot list above is going to go with us when we go filming. It will be a rough guidline to what parts of a scene we will be filming at, and in what order. On the day of the filming we my choose to film different parts at different times, to concede with the location. This will help us when filming because we will know exactly what to do and will not have to waste time deciding and thinking about what to do.

Call Sheet

We have made a call sheet to organize who we need whilst filming and what time they need to be there, this will make us prepared for when we will film. We also have used contacts so when we film we can contact each other.

We have also written about the props, costume and equipment so we know what we need whilst filming.

We have made a call sheet to take with us when we film because it will make our filming run smoother and we can refer to the sheet to see if we have everything.

Digipack Idea

this is a tutorial on a photoshop effect we may use in our digipack. we think it is a cool effect and will make our digipack stand out. however we may not use it because there are other ideas we are thinking about.

This is our final test image. we desaturated the image and then we used the history brush tool to bring out the reds.

our original would have looked like this, but unfortunately we could not find our original.

Video Tutorial - Lighting and Streak filters.

In this tutorial it shows us how to make a streak filter. Streak filters create different lighting effects. To make streak filters for free this video give you ideas on how to make them. The only problem with using food packaging is that it will make the shot less focused. We think that using streak filters is a good idea in our music video because it will match the performance. Using different types of filters to focus on the main Artist will be good for our video.

This Video is about how to use lights in the music video. We will take ideas from this video because we want to create the same effect this video has (focusing on the main artist). We will use the ideas such as.

- Using lights pointed at the artist to form a shadow across one side of the body.
- Using a light behind the artist to separate them form the background.
- Changing the intensity of the lights depending on what you want.
- Using rim lights to make the face light up more.

We will use some of these lighting techniques to make our video look more professional.

Didgi Pack Ideas and Reserach

For our didgi pack front cover we have thought that we will have a picture of the band focusing on the main artist. We will use filters and effects in Photoshop to make it look professional.

We looked at indie rock band album covers too get some ideas.

Kasabians album cover has sue a black and white filter with red in. This gives the audience and idea of what type of music it is.

The Artic monkeys album cover has also used a black and white filter. It has a picture of the artist on the cover which is what we want as well.

This album cover is very similar to what we want to achieve, we want the whole band on the cover and also use the correct effects and text to represent the genre of music.

Story Board

We have made a rough storyboard outlining what we want to produce for our music video including what shots for what parts. We have made this to take with us during filming to guide us through the video. We have also written about what sort of lighting we want to use in some shots. This will help us in filming because then we know exactly what we want to film and wont have to improvise.

Location Ideas

this is a possible location for our music video. it is Kiefer's house and may be used for the performance shots. behind my house is a large drive, tis is where we will film. it isolated and private so there is no chance of interuptions.

on the right hand side of this river there is a public footpath on the river bank the go round the back of peoples houses and then to a large green. it is isolated and hardly ever used so there is a low chance of interruptions and any interruptions that may occur wont last long.

Risk Assessment

This is our risk assessment for our chosen location, Littleport.
We have made a risk assessment sheet and analyzed what we think could harm or danger us or the equipment during filming. This way we know of the hazard and can take action in preventing them. We have also made this list so we can change and minimize the risks before filming.

We will take the risk assessment with us during filming so whilst setting up we can look at what we have thought about and work around them to make filming as safe as possible.
